Ethical Practice

  • Ethical Framework for Good Practice

Glister Counselling ensures that all clients are entitled to high standards of practice and care from their counsellor. A good standard of care requires outstanding professional competence, which is achieved by committing to and observing professional ethics. Glister works in accordance with the Codes of Practice of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. The BACP ethical framework can be viewed HERE.

  • Respecting Human Rights and Dignity

Glister Counselling upholds a client’s right to be treated with respect at all times and in ways that meet their particular needs. Counselling is therefore provided regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability or age.

  • Confidentiality

Any information that you disclose to your counsellor during your sessions is kept confidential unless you give your consent for this information to be shared with a third party. There is one exception to this: if information relating to the risk of potential harm or actual harm to yourself or others is disclosed, further support may be required. Where possible, every effort will be made to involve clients in the safeguarding process.

“My 10 year old son had been struggling with a number of issues: bullying, bereavement and serious illness within our family over the preceding 2 years. He had become increasingly withdrawn and detached, low in mood and irritable. He then started to lose interest in his school work, having always been a bright and diligent pupil. Our family was extremely worried about him, as was the school. Having not had any direct experience with counselling we were a little apprehensive. Kerry is an extremely gentle lady and my son seemed to immediately connect with her and formed a good rapport. I sat in on the sessions, at his request, and it was enlightening for me to hear what he had been feeling and thinking. Within a few sessions he started to improve and now seems back to his old self, which has resulted in much relief and delight all round! He seems to have developed a greater awareness of his feelings and the impact that this can have on his thoughts since the counselling. I was surprised by the fact that he opened up so much to Kerry so quickly. He seemed very comfortable talking to her, which is testament to her friendly, kind and gentle approach. He always left the sessions feeling good about himself.”
